Polytechnique Montreal specifies sustainability learning outcomes for all its undergraduate students.
Undergraduate engineering programs at Polytechnique Montreal, like all other Canadian engineering schools and faculties, must receive an accreditation from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB, https://www.engineerscanada.ca/accreditation/about-accreditation). This accreditation requires, among other criteria, that accredited institutions demonstrate that their graduates possess 12 attributes.
One of these attributes (attribute 3.1.9) specifies a sustainability learning outcome for all engineering programs. This attribute is stated as follows:
"3.1.9 Impact of engineering on society and the environment: An ability to analyze social and environmental aspects of engineering activities. Such ability includes an understanding of the interactions that engineering has with the economic, social, health, safety, legal, and cultural aspects of society, the uncertainties in the prediction of such interactions; and the concepts of sustainable design and development and environmental stewardship." (ref: https://engineerscanada.ca/sites/default/files/accreditation_criteria_procedures_2015.pdf)
Polytechnique Montreal subscribes to this sustainability learning outcome and ensures that all its undergraduate students master attribute 3.1.9. In 2013-14, an institutional analysis grid was developed at Polytechnique to evaluate the acquisition of the 12 CEAB attributes by students. Each program then had the responsibility to determine where each attribute is to be acquired in the curriculum and in which courses or projects they are to be formally assessed at the end of the program.
For STARS AC-2 Credit, we thus consider that all undergraduate students at Polytechnique graduate from programs that have formally adopted sustainability learning outcomes (866 graduates in 2017-2018). To this number, we add the 5 graduates from our Specialized Graduate Program (DESS) in Sustainable Development and the 8 from our Certificate in Sustainable Buildings.
