A brief description of the organic landscape management program:

Area is maintained organically by implementing an IPM program that uses chemicals as a last resort. The drought tolerant nature of the majority of our landscape services us well in terms of pest management but our first step is to identify the species that is causing the disruption and remove the food source if possible to divert the pest. we also maintain our grounds in accordance with organic land care standards and sustainable landscape management concepts.

Pest management strategies include education, exclusion, sanitation, maintenance, biological and mechanical controls, and pre-approved, site-appropriate pesticides.

An Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at Pitzer College shall consist of the following steps:
1. Identify pest species.
2. Estimate pest populations a nd compare to established action thresholds.
3. Select the appropriate management tactics based on current on-site information.
4. Assess effectiveness of pest management
5. Keep appropriate records.

The College grounds are predominantly landscaped with drought tolerant plants, including cacti and succulent.

The Outback Preserve (see below) is identified for native landscaping that incorporates natural hydrology for storm water management.


A brief description of the institution's approach to landscape materials management and waste minimization:

All green waste from campus operations is either composted on campus or picked up by the City of Claremont, where it is composted and used as mulch in the community.


A brief description of the institution's approach to energy-efficient landscape design:

Substantially replaced turf areas on campus with drought tolerant landscaping and water efficient irrigation systems.

In additional to cacti, a large percentage of Pitzer's grounds are also native plants
