Pitzer College Student Garden and Chicken Coop
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In 2021 staff from the Robert Redford Conservancy, Facilities Department, and design professionals partnered with students to completely overhaul and expand the abandoned Student Garden. A chicken coop and a chicken camera were also installed in the newly envisioned Student Garden. The yield from the Garden and Coop included plants, herbs, and chicken eggs all or which are used by students
in cooking and serving meals in the adjacent Grove House kitchen. The Student Garden and Coop are is also utilized for classes to teach about sustainability, planting, and composting. Additionally, a paid internship and student worker program was instituted that provides 6 paying job a year.
