A brief description of the institution’s methodology for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement:
In 2022, the Penn State Living Our Values survey built upon the Values and Culture surveys conducted in 2013 and 2017. It was launched in November 2022 and concluded February of 2023.
This survey was conducted to learn more about Penn State’s culture and values, broadly: the degree to which Penn State community members live the University’s culture and its values, the existence of changes in the level of engagement by community members in Penn State’s culture and values over time, and the successes and opportunities in embodying the culture and values throughout the University. The survey built upon the Values and Culture surveys conducted in 2013 and 2017, and included a subset of the questions included in the 2013 and 2017 surveys.

In Fall 2017 Penn State contracted with an independent nonprofit organization to conduct a Values & Culture survey on its behalf, as a follow up to a similar survey conducted in 2013. The survey was distributed to all students, faculty, and staff at all campuses. The purpose of the survey was to better understand the culture of the University and the values of the Penn State community. In addition, Penn State has policies and procedures in place for employees to express grievances including HR79 - Staff Grievance Procedure, and HR76 - Faculty Rights and Responsibilities. The latter provides, among other things, for each college to have a person or group to serve in the role of ombudsperson. The objective is to enhance communication and clarify possible misunderstandings in situations which involve potential disputes, to advise faculty members and administrators as to appropriate courses of action, and to help settle matters before they become hardened into serious disputes.

In addition, every two years the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs prepares a Faculty Exit Study, based on information obtained through a voluntary interview or survey of departing tenured and tenure-track faculty. The goal is to better understand the experiences of tenure-track faculty members at Penn State and to respond to faculty concerns. https://opair.psu.edu/institutional-research/projects/faculty-exit-study/

A brief description of the mechanism(s) by which the institution addresses issues raised by the evaluation:
In response to the Penn State Values and Culture Survey's findings, University leaders are developing a plan to address challenges that were identified and maintain commitment to areas in which results improved. Data specific to colleges, campuses and units will be shared with leadership to identify and act upon strengths and challenges in accordance with the plan.
The Faculty Exit Study identifies specific areas of satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The report is shared internally with leaders and made publicly available. https://opair.psu.edu/project/faculty-exit-study/
