An updated Blue Cleaning Manual is intended to reduce the exposure of Penn State personnel and
building occupants to potentially hazardous products, equipment or procedures which
could adversely affect human health and the environment, indoors and outdoors. Environmentally preferable programs outlined in it stress health and the environment more than just appearance of the facility.
Penn State Blue Cleaning criteria for environmentally preferable cleaning products:
- Low VOC - Low toxicity - More moderate pH (4-11) - Concentrates - Low odor - Readily biodegradable
- Work in cold water - No carcinogens - Multiple use products - No heavy metal floor finishes
- Products in recyclable packaging - Products used in dilution control systems
Penn State utilizes an Enterprise Energy Management Suite for tracking of energy commodity purchasing, energy and water consumption, meter data and real time energy data for a select number of buildings. This system allows for accurate tracking of energy consumption and the data is used to inform development of Energy Program projects. The Energy Program consists of energy usage monitoring and benchmarking, performance contracting, energy efficiency and continuous commissioning.
