A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:
•All technology with a Pacific University asset tag (e.g., computers, monitors, printers) is required to be returned to UIS when it is no longer in use or when replaced by newer equipment.
•Students, faculty and staff are encouraged by UIS staff (via the Sustainable Technology webpage, or in response to inquiries about disposing of technology) to bring any technology, asset tagged or not, to the TIC for reuse/recycling.
•All technology returned to UIS and moved to our technology storage area is moved using rolling carts and a freight elevator, thus reducing the possibility of injury to workers. All actual recycling of computers is not handled by Pacific University workers.
• All returned equipment is evaluated for possible re-use. If UIS decides it may be able to re-use equipment (or parts from equipment) it is held for that purpose. If UIS decides it cannot reuse equipment, it is moved to the disposal area of UIS's technology storage space.
•UIS sometimes donates equipment from the disposal area to local schools.
•All other not-reusable technology is given to a technology recycler. Currently, UIS uses MIC Total Recycle or Simply Marvelous Recycling. MIC Total Recycle is an electronics recycling company that has been inspected and approved by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and inspected by the EPA. Simply Marvelous Recycling advertises itself as EPA and DEQ compliant.
