A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive experience(s) offered by the institution:
a. The Department of Environmental Studies at Pacific University offers two majors, sustainable design and environmental science, which combine courses, lab and field experiences for a comprehensive understanding of relationships between people and the environment. Students are offered a two-course sequence in permaculture design taught at the B Street Demonstration Farm. The B-Street project site is located on a Metro-owned property less than a mile from the Pacific University campus in Forest Grove, near the intersection of Gales Creek and B-Street. The B-Street Sustainability Project is an emerging grassroots organization and demonstration site whose mission is to provide inspiration and information about environmentally sensitive, sustainable living practices for Pacific University students, city residents, local schools and other Forest Grove community members. Site projects engage participants in community building, research, and demonstration for the purpose of providing the impetus for sustainable practices in the Forest Grove community in accordance with permaculture principles and ethics.
b. Most students in the Environmental Studies Program participate in one or more internships that are an integral part of their undergraduate studies. Pacific University Environmental Studies Program has connections with many organizations, including science laboratories and environmental nonprofit organizations. Pacific Environmental Studies Program also has several work study positions in ecological restoration and domestic groundwater monitoring (see program website for many examples of internships in Oregon, the US and abroad).
