Inventory of the institution’s sustainability research:
---

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
OSU Sustainability Office staff reviewed all 1,407 rows of FY20 active research award data obtained from the OSU Research Office, read all abstracts for new awards not previously reviewed, and coded awards according to their alignment with the Earth Charter and other sustainability principles.

As indicated in OSU’s Strategic Plan, research activities should advance the science of sustainable earth ecosystems, improve human health and wellness, promote economic development and social progress, and/or expand the current knowledge base within sustainability focus areas such as alternative energy, climate, and materials sciences. Faculty and staff were considered researchers if they were successfully awarded research money via an external grant allocation or process.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The total number of employees that conduct research, as well as the number of employees engaged in sustainability research, both include academic staff for whom research is considered in promotion and/or tenure decisions plus others, such as non-academic staff.

The count of "number of academic departments (or the equivalent) that include at least one faculty or staff member that conducts research" listed for this credit is greater than the academic department count in other credits. For this Research credit, we define "academic departments" to include all university units conducting sponsored research, which includes centers, institutes and programs (CIPS), cooperative extension offices, Ag Experiment Stations, Student Affairs and others, in addition to traditional academic departments.
