A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):

OSU Sustainability Office staff reviewed all 2,596 rows of FY19 active research award data, read all abstracts for new awards not previously reviewed, and coded awards according to their alignment with the Earth Charter and other sustainability principles. As indicated in OSU’s Strategic Plan, research activities should advance the science of sustainable earth ecosystems, improve human health and wellness, promote economic development and social progress, and/or expand the current knowledge base within sustainability focus areas such as alternative energy, climate, and materials sciences. Faculty and staff were considered researchers if they were successfully awarded research money via an external grant allocation or process.
