A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):

OSU Sustainability Office staff reviewed all 1,644 rows of active research award data for FY17 and coded awards according to their alignment with Earth Charter and other sustainability principles. As indicated in OSU’s Strategic Plan, research activities should advance the science of sustainable earth ecosystems, improve human health and wellness, promote economic development and social progress, or expand the current knowledge base within sustainability focus areas such as alternative energy, climate, and materials sciences. Faculty and staff were considered researchers if they were successfully awarded research money via an external grant allocation or process.
