A brief description of the plan of action to achieve waste reduction goals:
We are in the beginning stages of our Zero Waste Initiative. This year Campus Recycling, the Sustainability Office, and University Housing and Dining have started a compost pilot program in four of the res halls. Campus Recycling is also working with several departments on campus collecting compost. Campus Recycling and Republic Services are working together to construct an on-campus transfer station for faculty and staff. We are also proposing a commingle collection program in the resident halls that will help make recycling easier for freshman living at the res halls. We are talking with athletics and our concessions vendor about changing all serving ware at athletic events to compostable products.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Data provided for this FY12 STARS submission came from improved data gathering and waste hauling measurement relative to OSU's FY10 STARS submission. In part, Republic Services, OSU's waste hauler, began making precise measurements of each dumpster emptied with their equipment. With improved measurement, OSU hopes to continue progress in waste reduction relative to our 2005 baseline year.
