A brief description of the snow and ice removal program, policy, or practice:

In certain areas, the campus uses geothermal piping under steps, sidewalks and some driveways to melt ice. Unfortunately, these ground systems do not exist under all areas of campus. In other areas, standard crystallized magnesium-chloride snow-melt mixes are used. The brand used for 2011/2012 was the FreezeGuard mix. The MSDS (material safety data sheet) for magnesium chloride aqueous solution says that "it may be harmful to freshwater aquatic species and to plants that are not saline tolerant."
