A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
OIT has the only geothermal combined heat and power system in the western hemisphere. Others exist in Iceland, Europe, and Japan, but this is the first system of its kind in the United States. It serves to offset the parasitic electrical loads required to pump geothermal water for campus heating making this an energy-neutral activity. The system also supplies excess energy, which offsets campus electricity requirements in part.
