Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Trash-2-Treasure event
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Here's how it works (as described by Amanda Crowell who handled this initiative:
We ask everyone (students and College employees) to clean out their homes of unwanted goods of any kind (no actual garbage or porn).
There's a central place set up with many tables and a general time. We will do this in connection with Earth Day in April. Everyone brings their stuff at any point through the time period and helps divide it into categories. As this is on-going, it allows for a staggered, organized chaos. It looks like a typical church rummage sale.
...Except everything's FREE. BYOBag.
After the event, anything not taken gets donated, typically to the Salvation Army or the Warwick Hope Chest. A 15' box truck was rented for the final donation. It was completely full. We probably had three times that originally on the tables (although some of what was left on the tables was thrown away before we packed the donation truck, just because it was more garbage-y).
Anyway, it's a fun event, keeps stuff out of the dump, and hopefully everyone finds "new" things-- which also cuts down on our consumerism.
