Brundtland Commissions Report’s definitions as guides. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brundtland_Commission)
In that reference “sustainability” and “sustainable development” are used almost interchangeably. To
summarize:

Sustainable development is that which “meets the needs of the present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own needs".

A decision is sustainable when it takes an appropriately balanced view of ecological, economic and
equity concerns.
Sustainability, when related to content of academic courses, may pertain to some or simultaneously all of these:
human capitol, financial capitol, and environmental or physical capital.

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:
During the 2009-2010 academic year, Academic Affairs conducted a Sustainability Baseline, an inventory of
course content that is related to sustainability. It was done in preparation for input of college data into the
STARS ratings system (A Sustainability Committee activity).
Academic department chairs, operating with departmental feedback, placed their course offerings into one of
the following categories: (focused or related)
