Ontario Tech has committed to the national goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 (with halving by 2030). Supporting this locally, Ontario Tech is leading the regional GHG emissions inventory (all scopes, including global emissions associated with all local activities). This local GHG inventory is one of the world's most comprehensive and is integrated with regional stakeholders such as General Motors Canada, Ontario Power Generation, local school boards and municipal governments. The university, and key stakeholders, are reporting progress annually with direct support from the President of Ontario Tech University.

Ontario Tech University works alongside Durham Region to calculate the region's greenhouse gas emissions as the university works towards its net zero emissions by 2050 goal. This inventory includes the City of Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, and Whitby that are all within Durham. This inventory is overlooked by the senior administration team at Ontario Tech University and Durham Region.

Ontario Tech has pledged to halve its emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest. This target has been agreed upon by all members of senior administration, including the President. This goal aligns with the Canadian federal government's net zero emission by 2050 goal.
