A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
The Welcoming Diversity training is also available to students. Led by Onondaga Community College’s own trained facilitators, this experiential and participatory one-day workshop examines how participants have been taught to think and act as members of their racial, gender, and other identity groups, and provides skills for bridging and celebrating differences.
This National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) based workshop consists of a series of incremental activities that engage participants in the leadership skills necessary to build inclusive environments and increase cultural competence.
These skills include:
*Valuing and welcoming similarities and differences among group members;
*Examining the stereotypes that impact our actions and attitude toward others;
*Identifying the harmful effects of stereotypes directed toward one’s own group;
*Learning specific skills for preventing and interrupting bigoted remarks and behavior; and
*Developing empathy toward others by hearing their personal stories.
