A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
Onondaga Community College has developed a Sustainable Landscape Master Plan to guide sustainable management of the College's grounds. The Sustainable Landscape Master Plan establishes goals and strategies for using native plants, managing stormwater runoff, maximizing open and wildlife habitat, and promoting pedestrian access and bicycle usage. The Sustainable Landscape Master Plan is in addition to the Facilities Master Plan, focusing on sustainable management of the campus grounds. The College is currently implementing the recommendations of the Sustainable Landscape Master Plan including growing meadows across campus and utilizing native plants. This has greatly reduced fuel and labor associated with mowing grass. The initiative has also provided a learning opportunity for the campus and community members. Onondaga has presented at a conference on the innovative Sustainable Landscape Master Plan, has been highlighted in local sustainability-focused media coverage, and has answered questions from community agencies about best practices in sustainable landscaping management strategies.
