Percentage of employees assessed, directly or by representative sample:
A brief description of the institution’s methodology for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement:
The Work Positive Survey is the University of Galway's method for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement. It was most recently conducted in 2023 with a representative sample of University of Galway employees. All staff were invited to participate in a confidential online survey and there were 680 responses, broadly representative of the university's employees. There were 35 questions under the following themes: demand, control, manager support, peer support, relationships, role and change.
Some example questions under the 'demand' theme: Q1. Different groups at work demand things from me that are hard to combine Q2. I have unachievable deadlines Q3. I have to work very intensively Q4. I have to neglect some tasks because I have too much to do Q5. I am unable to take sufficient breaks Q6. I am pressured to work long hours Q7. I have to work very fast Q8. I have unrealistic time pressures. Questions specific to the University of Galway were also included and employees were given the opportunity to provide free text responses.
A brief description of the mechanism(s) by which the institution addresses issues raised by the evaluation:
1. Meetings with University Management Team members to discuss the issues raised by the evaluation in their areas.
2. Gather feedback on what has been implemented since the survey and possible actions to be completed.
3. Set up working groups for particular issues.
4. Finalise SMART actions for each area.
5. Communicate on closing of actions.
6. Review.
