A brief description of the institution’s formal participatory or shared governance bodies:
The three pillars of the organisational structure of University of Galway are:
1) Governing Authority (Údarás na hOllscoile)
2) Academic Council
3) University Management Team
Of these, the Governing Authority (Údarás na hOllscoile) is responsible for managing and controlling all of the affairs of the University. It contains academic and non-academic staff, students union officers, students and former students. Representatives of ordinary academic and non-academic staff are elected to the Governing Authority (i.e. not just management representatives).

The Academic Council is the chief academic authority and, subject to review by Údarás na hOllscoile, controls the academic affairs of the University, including the curriculum, instruction and education provided by the University (more information at the webpage link below).
The University Management Team is led by the President who is the Head and Chief officer of the University and appointed for a 10-year period. Acting under the President, the various members of the University Management Team each have a specific area of responsibility (more information at the webpage link below).
Academic and non-academic staff are also represented by trade unions SIPTU and IFUT. As a public sector body, University of Galway is covered by collective bargaining and public sector pay agreements.
