The Universities of Sanctuary Programme at the University of Galway aims to increase public awareness on international protection, migration and nomadism, in an effort to address the low levels of participation of underrepresented groups in third-level education. International protection applicants, refugees, vulnerable immigrant groups and Irish Travellers are too frequently excluded from participation in education due to inequitable societal barriers, and we feel that through our actions as a designated University of Sanctuary we can make Galway's community a much more inclusive and equitable space for all.
The University of Sanctuary campaign was officially launched at University of Galway on the 22nd February 2018 by the then newly appointed President of University of Galway, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh.
Since this formal launch, and with the full support of the University of Galway President, the Steering Committee has embedded the ethos of the Places of Sanctuary across campus with the aspiration of creating an inclusive, inviting and welcoming campus for all people. The overall aim of the University of Galway campaign is to break down the barriers for individuals regardless of their societal positioning, and offer a genuine ‘Welcome to University of Galway’.
