1st program
A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):
University of Galway Sustainability Office recruits two Student Sustainability Interns each year. These students receive training from the Sustainability Office staff and complete a three-month internship. The students spend this internship creating sustainability education materials for their fellow students.
A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (1st program):
In 2024, the two interns compiled a suite of learning tools, resources and engagement material aimed at raising awareness and enhancing understanding of sustainability and the SDG among the student cohort; assisted in the development of engagement material suitable for incoming first year sustainability orientation programmes; and refreshed our website and social media platforms with up-to-date content reflecting efforts across campus to embed sustainability and progress the SDGs.

University of Galway-owned campus accommodation (Atalia Student Residences) recruited and trained four Student Sustainability Champions for the 24/25 academic year. Living in campus residences, the role of Sustainability Champions is to support Atalia Student Residences in achieving its sustainability targets, by increasing awareness, promoting initiatives and encouraging best practice in the area of sustainability, amongst fellow residents.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Increase fellow residents’ understanding and awareness of sustainability
• Actively promote sustainability initiatives in campus residences
• Encourage positive behaviour amongst residents in the context of sustainability. Key areas include: waste reduction, correct segregation of waste, responsible energy usage, health and wellbeing
• Act as a point of contact for residents for sustainability-related issues and as a liaison between residents and the Atalia team
• Act as a sustainability role model
• Assist in the production of sustainability-related communications and materials
• Help to foster a sense of shared responsibility in the area of sustainability
• Promote and attend events and initiatives designed to enhance residents’ experience, particularly in the area of sustainability

University of Galway has approximately 100 active Student Societies, offering you great opportunities to meet people with similar interests, try new things and have fun.
Many of these societies are environmentally themed: Environmental Society, Energy Society, Organic Gardening Society, Vegan Society, Green Society, Botany Society, Marine Society.
A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (3rd program):
In Societies, students undertake a series of training workshops in order to be peer to peer leaders that are conduits of knowledge, organising events, welcoming new members and delivering on the Societies objectives.
We estimate that 10 students were trained in each of the 7 environmentally themed student societies (total = 70). Societies are active while students are active in their studies (approx. 30 weeks). We estaimate that each trained student works 4 hours per week with their society.
