A brief description of the institution’s programs that help increase the diversity of higher education faculty:
ODU Preparing Future Faculty Program: PFF is a national initiative sponsored by the Council of Graduate Schools and the Association of American Colleges & Universities and supported by numerous disciplinary organizations in the life sciences, math, computer science, the social sciences, health sciences, and humanities. PFF involves providing graduate students with information and experiences relevant to academic careers in their field. Each semester, talks and workshops are offered related to the skills required to build a successful academic career. The Office of Research lists research development funding opportunities on the website. Examples include: Graduate Teaching Fellowships: The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) and General Motors (GM) will award General Motors Engineering Scholarships to members of AISES who are American Indian or Alaskan Native undergraduate or graduate students pursuing degrees in engineering. GM gives preference to electrical, industrial, or mechanical engineering majors. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Graduate Teaching Fellowship Program was established to encourage outstanding graduate students, especially women and minorities, to pursue the doctorate in Mechanical Engineering and encourage engineering education as a profession. In the term of the fellowship, the awardee must teach at least one lecture course.
