Monarch Dining purchases food and beverage through Sysco Corporation, the largest foodservice distributor in North America. Sysco Corporation distributes frozen foods, various canned and dry foods, fresh and frozen meats, seafood and poultry, imported specialties, and fresh produce. Monarch Dining’s sustainable food and beverage purchasing program is determined by where Sysco Corporation’s vendors are located.

Vendors’ cities within a 250 mile radius from Old Dominion University include: Siler City, North Carolina; Mount Olive, North Carolina; Dudley, North Carolina; Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania; Jessup, Maryland; Wyoming, Delaware; Baltimore, Maryland; Hunt Valley, Pennsylvania; Roanoke, Virginia; Norfolk, Virginia; Westover, Maryland; and Laurel, Delaware. Monarch Dining does have a commitment to increase level of sustainable food offerings, with a yearly growth goal of 5%.

8% of ODU Monarch Dining's food purchasing (from 9/1/2010-5/31/11) is local.


A brief description of the methodology used to track/inventory sustainable food and beverage purchases:

Old Dominion University's Dining Services have been gradually making strides toward sustainable food practices and standards. Aramark has made a commitment to purchasing responsibly. Addressing a broad spectrum of issues that impact the treatment of animals, they are currently working to eliminate painful procedures with suppliers, crate free veal and pork products, and cage free eggs.
