A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
Old Dominion University advocates for federal, state, and local public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability. ODU is taking action to align with state and federal priorities on energy policy, thus leveraging institutional research opportunities. Specifically, ODU is taking a leadership role in creating synergies in the mechanical engineering, chemistry and biochemistry, and ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences departments to support not only research in wind energy, but energy from waves, algae, and biofuels. Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell and former Assistant Secretary of the Army, John Paul Woodley, Jr., have served as the keynote speaker for the ODU Engineering Unplugged, the most innovative green engineering conference of its kind. ODU is also currently working with the City of Virginia Beach on several local, public initiatives that advance sustainability, specifically in the potential to assist the city, through ODU biofuels research, in the creation of an identifiable space to be used as a “green” village. http://www.odu.edu/ao/research/vcerc/index.shtml http://www.engineeringunplugged.com/ http://www.vcerc.org/
