Upward Bound is a federally funded program whose goal is to motivate and provide academic assistance to eligible high school students who show promise for success in education beyond high school. Located on the campus of Old Dominion University, the Upward Bound Program has two phases, a summer residential phase and an academic year phase. During the summer, students reside on campus for six weeks and receive intensive classroom instructions to prepare them for the upcoming school year. During the academic year phase, students attend sessions on Saturdays and receive individualized tutorial and classroom instructions designed to enrich their performance in high school classes. The students also receive academic advising, individual and group counseling and various workshops to assist them in preparing for personal growth and academic success. The Program is offered to ninth through twelfth grade students who reside in Norfolk and Portsmouth. Selected students shall show potential for success in a two or four-year college, but because of inadequate educational preparation, admission to such an institute would be difficult without the benefit of Upward Bound. Student Support Services (SSS), a TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education and facilitated out of Academic Enhancement, provides academic support to increase the retention and graduation rates of eligible students attending Old Dominion University. To help students achieve and maintain satisfactory academic standing at the University, program services and activities are designed to focus on students' learning styles and special needs. Student Support Services not only helps students succeed at the undergraduate level but also encourages them to pursue graduate studies. http://uc.odu.edu/sss/ The Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education (VTC), of which ODU is a member institution, sponsors the federally-funded TRIO-Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) providing free academic, vocational, career and financial aid information to first generation college students wishing to pursue a college degree. General Information: The Office of Student Financial Aid supports the mission of the University by assisting students and their families in reducing or eliminating financial barriers which might prohibit their participation in the degree programs offered by Old Dominion University. The office administers need-based financial aid programs funded by Federal, State, University, and private sources in the form of grants, Federal Direct Stafford/Ford Subsidized Loans, federal work-study programs, and both need-based as well as merit-based scholarships. In addition, the office administers the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, the Federal Direct PLUS loan and Graduate PLUS loan programs, which are non-need-based federally-supported sources of funding. Scholarships, Grants, Loans, and Student Employment: The University offers a variety of awards each year to qualified students who have been accepted for admission into degree programs. Some of these awards are available only to Virginia residents, while others are awarded without regard to state residency. Student assistance is offered on the basis of scholastic achievement and/or established financial need. Financial need is defined as the difference between the cost of education/attendance at Old Dominion University and the amount of money an applicant and his or her family are expected to make available from their income and assets to meet the expenses of that education. The eligibility for non-need Federal Direct Unsubsidized loans, Federal Direct PLUS loans and Graduate PLUS Loans are determined by a combination of factors, including dependency status, student classification (undergraduate/graduate, grade level), cost of attendance, and aggregate amount borrowed to date, to name a few. The Center for Learning and Teaching provides online tutorials, workshops, seminars, brown-bag discussions, and demonstrations on a variety of subjects each semester in its support of faculty. http://clt.odu.edu/facdev/

Upward Bound has several programs to prepare students from low-income backgrounds for higher education: Academic services provided by the program include classroom instructions and tutorial assistance in English, reading, mathematics, science and laboratory science, foreign language, social studies and elective classes. Guidance and Counseling services assist students in making educational and career decisions. College tours and cultural enrichment field trips are provided to increase students' awareness of their environment and college admissions' requirements. Stipends are given for program participation each Saturday during the academic year. A weekly stipend is also given during the summer residential component. In order to receive the stipend, the participant must show evidence of satisfactory participation in program activities to include: regular attendance and improve academic performance. Transportation to and from college tours, special activities, and cultural enrichment activities are provided for participants by the Upward Bound Program.

Endowed Scholarship College Scholarship Assistance Program (CSAP). This grant is awarded to eligible undergraduate students and does not have to be repaid. A recipient must be a Virginia resident working toward a first baccalaureate degree and must demonstrate financial need (FAFSA required), must be admitted into a Virginia public institution, must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours per semester), and must have a computed expected family contribution (EFC) of zero, among other criteria. Awards are comprised of both federal and non-federal funds because CSAP includes Virginia's allotment of the Federal Leveraging Educational Assistance partnership (LEAP).

The Upward Bound Program provides workshops for low-income students’ parents, family members and friends to share information on how to assist the child in preparing for success in high school and college, financial aid and career exploration workshops.

The Admissions Office provides presentations and campus tours for our student population, including participation in events geared towards first generation and low-income students. The Financial Aid Office staff provides a workshop for students and parents.

Academic Enhancement is Old Dominion University's portal to the academic programs available to entering undergraduate students and a facilitator of their progress through the institution and into their careers. Academic Enhancement coordinates existing University resources and develops new initiatives that promote academic excellence and that enhance the success of first-year and transferring undergraduate students. Services include orientation, placement testing, academic advising, parent programs, mentoring and tutoring, learning communities, career management, experiential learning evaluation, developmental course offerings, academic continuance, transfer student services, and student success programs.
