The Sustainability Literacy Assessment was developed through a mixture of research, then finalized by the Office of Sustainability and Karen Hickman, the Program Director for the Environmental Sciences undergraduate program. Those questions were then sent to University Assessment & Testing for vetting and for development of the final draft.

The Ferguson College of Agriculture was chosen as the test group for the first time the survey was going to be administered. This group was chosen by University Assessment and Testing.
A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
It contained 25 items on a 5-point Likert scale. Items 1-14 were on a frequency scale while 15-25 were on an agreement scale. There were two open ended questions that asked: "what are some sustainability related initiatives that you would like to see on OSU's campus?" and "what additional information would you like to know OSU to know about your thoughts on sustainability?" Data collection yielded 604 responses, with 582 in the final data set. A total of 588 open-ended comments were recorded over the two questions. After removing comments like "n/a" or "no," 496 open-ended comments were used for qualitative analysis.
