A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
In an effort to help staff and students work on their social sustainability skills, the college implemented a pilot program called "Golden Day of Service". Staff were given the opportunity to used paid time to participate in their favorite charity. A web-site was developed to help them find suitable projects or to add their own. T-shirts were distributed and a wrap-up celebration followed to ensure an even bigger turn-out next year.
Nearly 300 Okanagan College employees were joined by students on Friday, Feb. 14 in acts of volunteerism across the region in the Golden Day of Service.
Projects ranged from cleaning up the beaches of Kalamalka Lake to supporting the Vernon Food Bank, to building cat beds for residents of the Kelowna SPCA. Some employees engaged in promoting literacy in elementary schools, others painted the walls of the West Kelowna Boys & Girls Club.
