Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
CHaRM drop off and community partnership for the diversion of hard to recycle items

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The reach of Ohio University serves as a positive force in the South Eastern Ohio community beyond the geographic and operational boundaries of our campus. Ohio University maintains a permanent recycling center which in part serves as a CHaRM (Center for Hard to Recycle Materials) accepting items from both the campus and surrounding community. From off-campus sources, including local libraries and schools, we accept and process for recycling predominately E-Waste and literal tons of books but also batteries, light bulbs, toner cartridges and clean non-food related Styrofoam. Our keystone annual CHaRM event is held in conjunction with the county fairboard, a local radio station and over a dozen non-profit organizations, government agencies and recycling businesses. Accepting hard to recycle items and gently used donations, the Community Recycling Day gives the opportunity for area residents to, for example, donate appliances, furniture, food, building supplies or clothes on the same day and at same event in which they can recycle such items as tires, paint, unused medications, confidential materials, E-Waste, mattresses, and more. In 2017 a total of 63,581 lbs of materials were collected in a single day for recycling and donation.
