The University engages with Athens City Council to promote public policies which encourage sustainability particularly in the areas of sustainable transportation (public transportation, bicycling infrastructure), stormwater best management practices (MS4 stormwater management programs) and zero waste initiatives. Staff from the Office of Sustainability are members of several city or joint city/university commissions that advocate for sustainability.

The first day he took office, our new president, Dr. Duane Nellis, signed the "We are Still In" declaration. "Spanning red and blue regions across 50 states, its signatories demonstrate America’s enduring commitment to delivering on the promise of the Paris Agreement and America’s contribution to it. To date, ‘We Are Still In’ is the largest cross section of the American economy yet assembled in pursuit of climate action."
Dr. Nellis also advocated to Ohio's congressional delegation in support of DACA.
Ohio University is also a signatory to the Carbon Commitment.
