Nondiscrimination Policy

 

The College is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy educational and employment
environment that is free from sex discrimination, which includes discrimination and harassment
based on sex stereotypes, sex characteristics, pregnancy or related conditions, sexual orientation,
and/or gender identity or expression, as well as sexual violence, domestic violence, dating violence
and stalking. As part of this commitment, the College does not adopt or implement any policy, procedure, or practice, or take any action regarding a student, employee, or applicant for employment, that
discriminates against such individuals on the basis of their current, potential, or past pregnancy or
related conditions, or that treats such individuals differently on the basis of sex with regard to their
current, potential, or past parental, family, or marital status, or their status as the head of household
or principal wage earner in their family unit. The College Administration has adopted these Procedures to implement the College’s Nondiscrimination Policy and College’s Prohibiting Sex Discrimination Policy to ensure a safe and healthy educational and employment environment, and meet legal requirements in accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), relevant sections of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (“VAWA”), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (“Title
VII”), relevant sections of the Illinois Human Rights Act, the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus
Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (“Clery Act”), the Preventing Sexual Violence in
Higher Education Act, and other applicable laws, regulations, and ordinances.
The College has an affirmative duty to respond promptly and effectively once it has knowledge of
conduct that may reasonably constitute sex discrimination in its education program or activity. The

Oakton College, a leader in adult and continuing education in Illinois, collaborates with Maine, Niles, Northfield, and Evanston Township high school districts to form an educational partnership called the Alliance for Lifelong Learning (ALL). In a typical year, more than 15,000 people register for adult education courses at the College. ALL coordinates the resources of each high school district to make additional instructional services available for every adult resident age 18 and over.

The following pages contain a diverse collection of interesting, challenging, and entertaining noncredit courses and events scheduled on weekdays, evenings, and weekends at Oakton's campuses in Des Plaines and Skokie and many neighborhood-based locations, including the following high schools:

  3. B.L.A.C.K Student Sucess Program (BSSP) - designed to empower Black students by understanding  the unique challenges and triumphs of the Black experience in higher education. BSSP is your support system for success from classroom to career, all within a community that celebrates Black excellence.
  4. The Emory Williams Academy for Black Men is a unique program designed to support the success of Oakton’s Black male-identifying students. Whether you want to earn your associate degree and transfer to a four-year school or kick-start a career with training, the Academy will meet you where you are and help you thrive.
  5. Oakton is committed to maintaining a peaceful and comfortable environment for all students to achieve their goals. The College strives to promote, foster and support a safe and inclusive campus community for students, employees and guests.

    We recognize the need for a welcoming campus where members of the diverse LGBTQIA2+ community are respected, valued and supported. This mission is achieved through educational and informative training opportunities, services and resources, and Title IX compliance.

    LGBTQIA2+ Advisory Council

    The LGBTQIA2+ Advisory Council at Oakton is dedicated to our anti-bias values and works to institutionalize policy that advocates for the LGBTQIA2+ community. Examples of this work are gender-inclusive restrooms, SafeZone trainings and more inclusive classroom instruction.

    SafeZone and Ally Training 

    SafeZone is a series of interactive trainings intended to allow students and employees to develop a better understanding of LGBTQIA2+ concerns and experiences, and become effective allies of the LGBTQIA2+ community. Participants are challenged to listen, share and grow.

    SafeZone Allies 

    SafeZone-trained employees at Oakton College can be identified by their display of the Safe Zone sticker.
