Sustainability and Naturalist Student Workers

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):

Student Workers for Sustainability and Naturalist  are selected/ appointed students to serve as peer educators and formally designates the students as educators (paid). Our office provides formal training to the student educators in how to conduct peer outreach and we support the program with financial resources by providing an annual budget via Sustainability and Naturalist Budgets. 

This program engages students as peers on a regular basis. For example, student educators may be responsible for serving the subset of students that are particularly enrolled in Environmental Studies Classes by leading and supporting outdoor experiential learning for these classes as student peers. Students in diversability organizations are also supported by Sustainability Student Peer leaders via experiential learning opportunities in the community Garden. Educators are trained directly by the Sustainability Specialist or Naturalist at the college via coaching, mentoring, and teaching of specific procedures and tasks related to sustainability and environment i.e seed collection, plant plugging, community gardening.

2nd program

Environmental Club

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):

Student leaders take peers, or club members out to educational excursions such as Moth Night, Seed Collection, Plant Plugging, Community Gardening, Sustainability Conferences, Waste reduction, and more. The program has been ongoing for 3 years. The student leaders are compensated via Sustainability, Naturalist, and Environmental club budgets for their paid hours. Student educators are trained by club advisors to draft a club constiution, manage program finances, book rooms, purchase supplies, recruit, and hoee to teach student peers on special sustainability projects and initiatives.

The target audience for this program is any student peer that is interested in learning more about sustainability or the environment. This program is open to all students at the college.

Oakton Waste Stations Outreach and Education program

A brief description of the student educators program (3rd program):

Paid student workers conduct outreach and education by setting up waste stations at catered events over 100 attendees, and offering waste education, sorting, and proper disposal techniques for sustainability. Student educators are offered paid training on types of waste collected at the college, how to dispose, how to set up stations, and how to teach attendees and peers to look for signs of composting, recycling, and landfill in their trash items. Events in which peer to peer outreach include market nights, college festivals, carrer fairs, and more.

The target audience for this program is any student peer that is interested in learning more about sustainability or the environment. This program is open to all students at the college. Any attendee or student of a large catered event is invited to engage with out student peers stationed for the program.
