Adjusted net GHG emissions

Adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net GHG emissions 21,150.86 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 31,085.60 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Performance and baseline periods

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Performance year Baseline year
Start date Sept. 1, 2021 Sept. 1, 2008
End date Aug. 31, 2022 Aug. 31, 2009

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
The 2008/2009 academic year baseline is used because this was the first year that NSCC began comprehensively tracking GHG emission data on a monthly basis for Scope 1 and 2 emission sources across all sites.

Part 1. Reduction in GHG emissions per person

Weighted campus users

Figures needed to determine “Weighted Campus Users”:
Performance year Baseline year
Number of students resident on-site 309 180
Number of employees resident on-site 2 0
Number of other individuals resident on-site 0 0
Total full-time equivalent student enrollment 12,817 9,976
Full-time equivalent of employees 1,945 1,633
Full-time equivalent of students enrolled exclusively in distance education 926 63
Weighted Campus Users 10,454.75 8,704.50

Metrics used in scoring for Part 1

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user 2.02 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 3.57 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Percentage reduction in adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user from baseline:
43.35

Part 2. GHG emissions per unit of floor area

Laboratory space 0 Square feet
Healthcare space 0 Square feet
Other energy intensive space 346,111 Square feet

EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
3,306,629 Gross square feet

Metric used in scoring for Part 2

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per unit of EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
0.01 MtCO2e per square foot

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
Impact on GHG emissions is factored in to NSCC's capital planning decisions, to best leverage infrastructure renewal projects to reduce our emissions.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Scope 1 and 2 emissions were calculated by NSCC Facilities management, based on heating fuel consumption, imported steam and electricity at all NSCC-owned sites. The data is compiled centrally and recorded in a historical database for historical comparison. Additionally, NSCC has now uploaded all of our current and historical fuel and electricity consumption data into Energy Star Portfolio Manager's online platform, which allows us to quickly calculate and compare yearly GHG emissions, as well as weather-normalized energy consumption data.

Business travel related GHG emissions were collected by requesting rental vehicle data from Enterprise Car Rentals, which is NSCC's primary rental vehicle associate. Enterprise provided a full GHG breakdown given NSCC's rentals throughout the fiscal year.
