Sustainability Steering Committee

A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
Due to NSCC's unique structure with 13 campuses across the province of Nova Scotia. The Sustainability team has had to use innovative programs to engage staff at all campuses. The central sustainability team host a minimum of four sustainability steering committee meetings per year. Each campus must send an executive representative from their campus sustainability committee to these steering meetings. The steering committee meetings provide updates on college-wide sustainability projects, events and other news and also use presentations to advance each committee member's sustainability knowledge. The campus representatives serving on the steering committee then report back to the campus sustainability committee and share learnings and best practices to be implemented at their campus. All staff are welcomed and encouraged to join the campus sustainability committee and the committees conduct regular outreach to the campus communities. Due to the nature of the committees building managers are required members of these committees and also report relevant information to facilities staff at regular staff meetings, including waste management practices, energy management practices and maintenance of the sustainability information boards on all campuses.

One of the activities that the campus representative facilitate is the annual campus orientation. This event targets all building occupants and is one of the most visible sustainability outreach events that happens on all campuses. During orientation, representatives are provided with a sustainability board specific to their campus. Members of the sustainability committee are trained on common sustainability topics and how to host conversations with students, and volunteers then staff the board during their work time. All committees are provided with a guide from the central sustainability office to support main speaking points and answer common questions about sustainability on their campus. Sustainability boards are posted in a public high-traffic space on campus for the two days of orientation and all staff and students are invited to visit.

SDG Workshop Delivery Guide
The SDG Workshop guide is a peer-to-peer training tool launched in partnership between NSCC Sustainability Team and Organisational Development. This tool provides the background and tools necessary for any staff member to carry out a sustainability workshop. Staff are encouraged to integrate the workshop into regular staff meetings, conferences or as a standalone offering. The guide provides a PowerPoint presentation, speaking notes, facilitated discussion questions, in-person and virtual activity ideas and general support for facilitating a workshop. The goals of the workshop are to

- Increase awareness of the SDGs and the College’s commitment to the Accord.
-Increase engagement with the SDGs.
-Instill and inspire a desire to participate and support College, campus, department and or individual goals.
-Share knowledge and experiences on how to address the goals.
-Build capacity to act and implement changes to achieve the goals.

Due to the independent nature of this program, The college does not have a participation tracking method. However, all staff are eligible to host or participate in this program.
