A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
ORIENTATION BOOTHS
Each of NSCC’s 13 campuses has a sustainability committee. Volunteers from the committees set up a booth in a common area during the two days of student orientation. The booth has a poster with information on sustainability at NSCC, and volunteers talk to students about what sustainability is and what it means to NSCC. Each campus is provided with a professional tri-fold poster board that contains information about that specific campus and any sustainability projects, features and/or initiatives. While chatting with students about sustainability, volunteers also advertise our sustainability assessment survey. Prizes are given to students for participating in the survey and are used to encourage students to interact with sustainability. The information booths are a great way to educate students about sustainability and to advertise how they can get involved. Our e-campus was provided with an electronic version of the board and was included in every student’s guided orientation.
STUDENT ADVISING HANDBOOK
Sustainability is also featured in the Student Advising Handbook, which is part of a new student’s welcome package. This guide helps students to orientate to different services and departments at the College. The Handbook outline NSCC's key sustainability programing and ways for students to get involved during their time at NSCC. There is also a guided activity which challenges students to set three sustainability goals for their time at school, including a goal for reducing energy use, improving their transportation impact and getting involved in sustainability.
