A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:
The literacy assessment for students was developed by NSCC's Sustainability team in collaboration with Institutional Research. This was paired with the Sustainability Culture assessment (EN-6) in order to limit survey fatigue experienced by students. The pre-assessment survey was distributed to all NSCC students in advance of the 2022/23 Fall Academic semester. The post-assessment survey is scheduled to be conducted at the end of the Spring 2023/24 semester. To capture that change in sustainability over a two year period, which is the average length of programs offered at NSCC.
A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
The assessment was sent directly to all incoming (first year) NSCC student emails in advance of the 2022/23 Fall academic semester. There was a 33% response rate (3000+ responses).
A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
Through the survey NSCC student respondents showed a fair understand of sustainability.
-76% of students were able to correctly identify the definition of sustainable development, while 95% of students were able to correctly identify the three pillars of sustainability.
- 39% of student identified that there were 17 Sustainable Development Goals published by the United Nations.
-65% of student were able to identify that greenhouse gas emissions were the leading cause of climate change and 86% identified that carbon dioxide was the leading GHG generated by human activity.
- Students identified the following increase in average global temperature as being catastrophic; 0-1 degree 27%, 1-2 degrees 29%, 2-3 degrees 14%, 3-4 degrees 7%, 4-5 degrees 6% while 18% were unsure.
