Green Building Excellence Award

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:

On September 30, 2019, NSCC was awarded the Atlantic Chapter of Canada Green Building Council’s Green Building Excellence - New Construction or Commercial Award for NSCC’s Pictou Campus Trades Wing addition. This award honours projects that demonstrate optimal building performance and occupant satisfaction.

The Hon. Dr. John Hamm Trades and Innovation Centre was officially opened in November 2018. It provides the campus with a specialized, multi-use training space for students enrolled in carpentry, cabinetry, motor vehicle repair, and heavy-duty equipment programs. The LEED Gold Certified building features an HVAC system that is heated by a south-facing solar wall and includes geothermal in-floor heating and other features designed to reduce energy and water consumption.

Inspired Educator

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

On September 30, 2019 NSCC was awarded the Atlantic Chapter of Canada Green Building Council’s Inspired Educator Award for the ESET Program. NSCC has recognized the emerging alternative energy sector in Nova Scotia and developed the Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology (ESET) Program. In the two-year diploma program, students learn to do energy audits, model existing conventional heating and lighting systems, assess the overall efficiency of buildings and offer solutions for improvements. A hands-on component allows students to work in the Pilikan House - a living lab that provides experience with alternative energy technologies, demonstrating how sustainable practices can be incorporated into building design. Through the ESET program, NSCC ensures that future workers are sustainability-focused and environmentally-conscious.
