A brief description of the single-use disposable plastics that have been banned or eliminated:
The NSCC has banned plastic straws from all of our 15 cafeterias across the province. We have many different caterers from larger companies (i.e. Chartwell's) to small local businesses that run these sites and they have all switched to compostable, paper straws. To ensure the straws are composted, the campuses have quad stream waste sorting stations in the cafeteria that include comprehensive signage on where to dispose of the straws. The College also does waste audits once a semester to analyze each campus' waste sorting accuracy.
The removal of plastic straws from all of our campuses is the beginning of our efforts to remove all single-use plastics.
