Has the institution conducted an assessment to identify areas of biodiversity importance on land owned or managed by the institution?:
Yes

A brief description of areas of biodiversity importance on land owned or managed by the institution:
We prioritize conservation and protection of several areas of land. We strive to protect our oak groves, which cover south and central campus, particularly during construction. We also advocate for protection of our native wooded areas and old growth trees.

Buildings are built with migratory bird paths in mind and utilizing reflective coatings to prevent bird strikes.

Methodologies

If yes to either of the above, provide the following:

The methodologies used to identify endangered and vulnerable species and/or areas of biodiversity importance and any ongoing assessment and monitoring mechanisms:
Assessments were carried out for the Segal Center and for Ryan Fieldhouse, because they affected existing natural areas. New construction on the Evanston campus that affects existing natural areas undergoes some form of environmental assessments to monitor to runoff and assess wildlife.

A brief description of the scope of the assessment(s):
New buildings and construction projects of interest have been assessed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Illinois EPA and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.

A brief description of the plans or programs in place to protect or positively affect identified species, habitats, and/or ecosystems:
Northwestern and the City of Evanston have launched a collaborative project to create a bird sanctuary to the south of the newly constructed Segal Visitor’s Center just off campus. Although this area is not formally protected, its maintenance and conservation is important to Northwestern.
