A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
The Institute for Sustainability and Energy (ISEN) runs three separate summer study abroad programs to Israel, China, and Germany. Within these week to month long programs, students engage in a variety of sustainability topics related to water, biotech, organic photovoltaics, sustainable materials, big data/smart cities, renewable energy, sustainable production chains, and energy technology and policy.

Students can study abroad in Ecuador for the Comparative Ecology & Conservation program where they explore tropical ecosystems, conduct biological fieldwork, and study conservation in one of the world’s most biodiverse countries and complete an independent study project.

In Bolivia, students can conduct an independent study project and complete field-based, experiential program courses to explore how concepts of community well-being and cultural identity are being creatively redefined in a country with 36 ethnic groups and the first indigenous president in the Americas. Key areas include environmental sciences, studies or policy, social science and cultural studies.

The Chicago Field Studies program also immerses students in Environment and Sustainability by enrolling students in a quarter-long class that explores the development of sustainability and its community and economic dimensions. Simultaneously, students also pursue an internship at one of multiple locations in Evanston and Chicago that explore different aspects of sustainability, from local policy, to food justice, to renewable energy.
