The methodology(-ies) used to identify endangered and vulnerable species and/or environmentally sensitive areas and any ongoing assessment and monitoring mechanisms:

Assessments were carried out for the Segal Center and for the new Fieldhouse on the north side of SPAC, because they affected existing natural areas. New construction on the Evanston campus that affects existing natural areas undergo some form of environmental assessments to monitor to runoff and assess wildlife. Building are built with migratory bird paths in mind and Northwesterns attempt to reflect birds from running into them.

A brief description of identified species, habitats and/or environmentally sensitive areas:

We prioritize conservation and protection of several areas of land. We strive to protect our oak groves which cover south and central campus, particularly during construction. We also advocate for protection of our native wooded areas and old growth trees.

Building are built with migratory bird paths in mind and Northwesterns attempt to reflect birds from running into them as we're next to the lake and near many bird paths.

A brief description of plans or programs in place to protect or positively affect identified species, habitats and/or environmentally sensitive areas:

In addition, Northwestern and the City of Evanston have launched a collaborative project to create a bird sanctuary to the south of the newly constructed Segal Visitor’s Center just off campus. Although this area is not formally protected, its maintenance and conservation is important to Northwestern.
