Does the institution have policies and/or guidelines in place to improve outdoor air quality and minimize air pollutant emissions from mobile sources?:
Yes
None
A brief description of the policies and/or guidelines to improve outdoor air quality and minimize air pollutant emissions from mobile sources:
Northwestern has a no-idling policy, which is posted at all university loading docks. The anti-idling ordinance is communicated to vendors and prohibits standing or parked vehicles over 8000 lbs in gross weight from idling their engines in any 60-minute period.
None
Has the institution completed an inventory of significant air emissions from stationary sources on campus?:
Yes
None
A brief description of the methodology(ies) the institution used to complete its air emissions inventory:
Northwestern is required to complete an inventory of all air emissions in coordination with the Illinois EPA's regulations.
None
Weight of the following categories of air emissions from stationary sources::
Weight of Emissions | |
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) | 151.36 Tons |
Sulfur oxides (SOx) | 0.49 Tons |
Carbon monoxide (CO) | 47.03 Tons |
Particulate matter (PM) | 5.88 Tons |
Ozone (O3) | --- |
Lead (Pb) | 0.00 Tons |
Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) | --- |
Ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) | --- |
Other standard categories of air emissions identified in permits and/or regulations | --- |
None
A brief description of the institution’s initiatives to minimize air pollutant emissions from stationary sources, including efforts made during the previous three years:
Design guidelines for buildings are tailored to minimize air pollutant emissions. Use of zero CFC-based refrigerants is the minimum requirement, and Northwestern only uses refrigerants that have low impact on both ozone depletion and global warming.
Paint used on pavement is latex, waterborne emulsion, lead and chromate free.
