The SustainNU Eco-Rep Program provides a structured forum for students to engage with peers around sustainability issues and opportunities in the residence halls, residential colleges, Greek houses, graduate schools and graduate housing and the campus environment in general. Eco-Reps interact with the student population in several ways. They put up signs and educational materials in their residence halls and hold fireside chats with residents on a variety of topics to educate them about sustainability. During Green Cup, the month-long competition between residence halls to reduce energy and water use, Eco-Reps encourage participation and hold events like scavenger hunts and green activities fairs.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

Eco-Reps are elected by their peers in residence halls, residential colleges, Greek houses and in the graduate schools - Kellogg, McCormick, Weinberg, the Law School and the Feinberg School of Medicine. In many cases, the position is on the residence hall executive board.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

There are two formal training sessions held in the Fall and Spring, led by the Office of Sustainability, the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Housing. There are also bi-weekly meetings where Eco-Reps hear from speakers or are given presentations on energy and sustainability topics.


A brief description of the financial or other support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

The Office of Sustainability provides a full-time staff member to oversee the Eco-Rep program and to facilitate the Eco-Rep council. The program is funded by the Associated Student Government, sustainNU, and Student Affairs.

The environmental programs Student Advisory Board is made up of 4 students from the Environmental Science and Environmental Policy and Culture programs. The students advise the program directors to shape developments in these academic departments, as well as organize events centered on sustainability for environmental students and the general campus. In the past, the Advisory Board has organized career panels, presentations from environmental professionals, environmental mixers, and Earth Day events.

The SAB representatives are appointed based on their involvement in environmental academic programs and demonstrated interest in the position.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):

The SAB representatives attend an orientation by the Weinberg College of the Arts and Sciences Student Advisory Board and are also led through a brief training covering their position's responsibilities by the directors of the Environmental Science and Environmental Policy and Culture programs.

The funding for these programs comes from the Environmental Science and Environmental Policy and Culture departments.
