A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
The Institute for Sustainability and Energy runs summer study abroad programs to China and Germany, which focus on the development of renewable energies, successful approaches in other countries, and the use of policy to promote sustainability. Students can also travel to Ecuador to study Comparative Ecology and Conservation, where they learn about natural resource use, the ecology of Ecuador including plant and animal life, and Ecuadorian life and culture. (http://www.northwestern.edu/studyabroad/programs/americas/ecuador-comparative-ecology-conservation.html) Students can travel to both Hangzhou , China and Beijing, China to immerse in the Energy Technology & Policy: Wanxiang Fellows Program, where the focus is new energy solutions, including solar. (http://www.northwestern.edu/studyabroad/programs/asia/green-technology-environmental-sustainability-wanxiang-fellows.html) Northwestern students can travel to San Jose, Costa Rica, to study Tropical Biology on a Changing Planet. This rigorous program is designed for biology and environmental science majors, but it is open to students from all disciplines who have completed one year of college-level biology. Using a combination of field-based and classroom instruction, hands-on research, and cultural exchange, students learn about the conservation of tropical ecosystems.(http://www.northwestern.edu/studyabroad/programs/americas/tropical-biology-changing-planet.html) On a study abroad trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, students can choose to specialize in sustainability studies. Through this program, they "examine the social, political, and economic issues associated with sustainable development and the range of Danish and European stakeholders shaping the sustainability agenda." (http://www.disabroad.org/study-abroad/programs/sustainability/) A study abroad program to Pune, India allows students to explore "Contemporary India: Development, Economy, and Society" where they study "developmental economics, environmental issues, social justice and public health" in both an Indian and global context. (http://www.northwestern.edu/studyabroad/programs/asia/contemporary-india.html) Alternative Student Breaks also runs trips over winter, spring and summer vacations to locations that emphasize ecological sustainability. In the past, students have gone to Native American preserves to learn about the intersection of native activism and environmentalism, to Puerto Rico to learn about sustainable forestry, and to wolf preserves to learn about species conservation. Some upcoming trips students will take are: Sustainability and the Arts, Detroit, MI and Food Insecurity, Jamaica Plains, MA. More information on the ASB trips past and present can be found here: https://www.northwesternasb.com/upcoming The Chicago Field Studies program also immerses students in Environment and Sustainability by enrolling students in a quarter-long class that explores the development of sustainability and its community and economic dimensions. Simultaneously, students also pursue an internship at one of multiple locations in Evanston and Chicago that explore different aspects of sustainability, from local policy, to food justice, to renewable energy.
