The students of Northland College are active in a wide array of community service and volunteer activities. All Freshman entering the College must enroll in the "First Year Experience" course and are required to perform at least one hour of community service to pass the course. In addition, the athletics programs require considerable community service as part of their training. The College also runs a formal Northland Volunteer Program, where representatives from the Northland College Student Association oversee and lead community service projects. Other community service comes from course-specific requirements, Environmental Council activities, Indigenous Cultures Center volunteer activities, Sunshine Bike Shoppe outreach, and the Growing Connections service-learning project.
