A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:
Northland's Center for Rural Communities partnered with the USDA to foster greater access to local foods, promote a diet based on regional foods, create vibrant and resilient local economies, and stimulate effective problem-solving through collaborative work between diverse stakeholders. The partnership began with a survey of 781 households across Ashland and Bayfield counties regarding the values, preferences, and behaviors toward local food, along with information about food security and food access. Researchers of this multi-year partnership have been making recommendations to the local communities regarding local food consumption. Furthermore, the partnership stimulates future applied research projects that may reduce inequality in the distribution of local food and increase small farm economic viability.
