A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
In 2008 Northland College was the first school to sign up for a voluntary self-audit program developed in partnership with the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the EPA, and the DNR. This program trained peers in best practices for handling toxic chemicals in the diverse settings of higher education. Teams of peer auditors led by a professional auditor reviewed each campus's practices. The results were compiled and each institution made a commitment to correct substandard practices and develop ongoing training in correct handling of toxic materials for faculty and staff. Northland continues to offer regular trainings and hires a consultant to spot-check departmental practices.
