A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

In 2000, the Northland College Student Association, an independent 501c3, voted to institute a Renewable Energy Fee charged to all students. The collected funds are used to finance a sustainability feature on campus. The Student Association has since voted to raise the amount of the fee on two occasions. Currently, the fee is $80.00 per year per student, ten percent of total fees per student. Fees have helped finance a number of the photovoltaic arrays on campus, the Fat Spaniel renewable energy monitoring system on campus, a hybrid car for Admissions, expansion of the campus garden, high-efficiency hand-dryers, and an expansion of the compost facility. The fee is a tangible expression of the students’ collective sense of responsibility to “walk the talk”.
