A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

We believe that an environmental liberal arts education should prepare students to work holistically, manage complexity, and to act as place-makers. Accordingly, we have redesigned the liberal arts core of the curriculum as follows:
-- one four course interdisciplinary block that includes writing and a scientific lens
-- one two-course interdisciplinary block focused on a humanistic understanding of the world
-- one two-course interdisciplinary block focused on interpreting the world from the perspective of social science
-- one experiential course

Students can choose to take:
Natural Connections -- several themed blocks
Superior Connections -- the full nine-course sequence focused on the Lake Superior Watershed
Growing Connections -- the full nine-course sequence focused on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems

We believe that the combination of pedagogy and content in the liberal arts program warrants the designation of an Environmental Studies minor. Thus, every student who completes the liberal arts core at Northland can elect to have an Environmental Studies minor designation posted on their transcript.
