Percentage of newly constructed or renovated building space certified under a green building rating system for design and construction:
A list of new construction and major renovation projects that indicates the green building code, policy/guideline, or rating system that applies to each building:
In March 2024, NMU adopted a sustainable design standard for all new construction projects (the standards are attached).
NMU has also worked to reduce its physical footprint. Using lower-than-average utilization rate and space inventory data the Facilities team continually evaluates and repurposes underutilized spaces instead of building new space; better utilizing the university’s existing facilities. Over the last ten years, the university has demolished underutilized and inefficient facilities such as the former Summit and Center St. apartment buildings, three of the four Quad I residence halls, Carey Hall, West Hall, Jamrich Hall and 25% of Jacobetti Complex totaling over 481,000 square feet.
The Woods Residence Hall complex (2018) on NMU campus met the requirements of LEED Green Building Certification to become LEED Silver under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. LEED Certification was not sought for The Northern Center Renovation (2019) renovation and the Northern Lights Dining Hall Renovation (2018), however they designed by and complied with the 2015 Michigan Uniform Energy Code Part 10 with ASHRAE 90.1
